mary kathleen mine site QLD

the abandoned mary Kathleen village, situated aprox midway between Cloncurry and Mt Isa on the barkly highway. GPS 20 46 170S 139 58 398E.

there is an onsite caretaker who is happy to have nudists stay, he claims we don't winge like the backpackers! there are no facilities. although back out on the highway about 4K east is a rest area with flush dunnies if you don't want to take a shovel behind the tree. when we were there the old mine site was accessable, about 7k out of the village. when you turn in off the highway not far down on your right is a break in the fence with a dirt track leading in to village, if you miss the break in the fenc, no sweat, just past it is an old cattle grid that takes you to same track. when you hit the T intersection turn right onto the bitumen, follow that down and turn left at the eight street on the left, then turn right over the creek and camp up towards the end of residential sites. it is a good spot for an overnight or couple of days to sit back and let the world go away. be sure to sign the wandering bares visitor book before you leave. the road out to the mine is probably no good for towing and is the one leaving towards the right lower corner of the map and if you don't come thru the fence the bitumen road in was fairly rough in places due to washaways.
